Coronaviruses are a group of viruses responsible for respiratory tract infections such as Common cold, SARS and MERS. The novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused more than 9,000 deaths worldwide and infected some 218,000 people.

As there are no vaccines and no treatment regimen, the best shot is to prevent it. This can be done by;

1⃣Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap and running water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand rub with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands that are visibly soiled.

2⃣ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

3⃣Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

4⃣Avoid handshakes. The WHO and CDC recommend the elbow shake and the footshake.

5⃣ Clean and disinfect surfaces you often touch with an alcohol based disinfectant.

6⃣ Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Remember to discard the tissue in a covered bin.

7⃣ Avoid travel to affected areas.

8⃣ Know the symptoms. This will help to identify any cases of the diseases and prevent spread. They include sore throat, headache, runny nose, cough and fever. In Cameroon, anyone who presents with symptoms can call the toll-free number 1510.

NB: CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) doesn’t recommend that healthy people wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. Only wear a mask if a health care provider tells you to do so.
